Daniel Taylor is a highly experienced commercial litigator and a specialist in libel, privacy, confidentiality and intellectual property. He was formerly Company Solicitor and in-house Counsel at News International Newspapers Limited, the UK’s premier media company, where he handled the largest individual media caseload in the UK for many years.
He has been involved in numerous leading media cases, including the only libel action ever won by the Sun newspaper at trial (Gillian Taylforth v News Group), as well as a first in English legal history in the Bruce Grobbelaar case, when the Court of Appeal overturned a jury libel verdict for the first time ever on the grounds it was perverse. He has fought actions against Heads of State – The Queen and an African President; Hollywood celebrities, including Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman and Clint Eastwood; UK actors including Hugh Grant and Nigel Havers; sports celebrities including David Beckham, Linford Christie and Kieran Fallon.
A number of the cases he has been involved in have led to changes in the law governing the media.
Daniel has many years of experience in dealing with pre-publication issues and the law of contempt, having been involved in copy clearance on a daily basis for the national press for many years in relation to ground breaking and agenda setting stories. He also defended the media in the two most serious contempts to face newspapers in the last 50 years.
As well as his media work, Daniel is able to advise on a wide range of pension related matters, having been Chairman of Trustees of three pension schemes at News International. He has chaired both defined benefit and defined contribution schemes.
He has wide experience in acting on a range of commercial disputes including contract claims, property related disputes and employment matters
